Why UGC took off: trust

People trust other people more than they trust brands. 92% of consumers trust recommendations from other people over branded content, and 84% trust a brand more when it uses real customer content. Gen Z has gone further: 52% say they trust information on social platforms more than Google or AI chatbots.

When everyone is selling, the most persuasive voice is the one that doesn’t sound like it’s selling.

From side effect to an industry

UGC is now a business in its own right. Estimates for the UGC platform market vary, but they put it at $8.5–12.6 billion in 2026, growing at 24–29% a year. Most forecasts expect it to be several times larger by the early 2030s.

The bigger change is in how brands use creators. Brands are moving from renting audiences to owning content. They now pay UGC creators mainly to produce videos the brand posts on its own channels and uses in paid ads, rather than paying for access to the creator’s followers. Follower count matters less. What matters is whether the content converts.

The India story

India is one of the fastest-growing UGC markets, led by D2C brands in beauty, wellness, fintech and electronics that constantly test new creatives on Meta. Two things set India apart:

  • Vernacular content. Regional-language content is now more than half of India’s media consumption. Brands want creators who speak naturally in Marathi, Bhojpuri or Odia, not dubbed English ads.
  • Micro and nano creators. Rough, honest, unfiltered content often beats polished influencer posts.

What’s next: AI, authenticity and accountability

1. AI will help creators, not replace them. One creator video can become dozens of variations with different hooks, languages and formats, without another shoot. But audiences can tell the difference. Human UGC scores about 81% on authenticity, while AI-generated UGC scores 63%.

2. Disclosure is becoming mandatory. 86% of consumers think AI-generated content should be clearly labelled, and 32% would trust a brand less if they found undisclosed AI content. Platforms like Meta already add “AI info” labels to ads.

3. Shoppable UGC. Live shopping and shoppable posts are removing the gap between watching content and buying.

4. Always-on creator programmes. Brands are replacing one-off campaigns with ongoing creator programmes, because a steady flow of fresh creative performs better.

What brands should do now

  • Build a UGC library, not a single campaign. Test several hooks, faces and formats every month/
  • Use AI to scale the content, but keep humans at the core. Use AI for variations and translations, and real people for trust.
  • Go regional. The next wave of customers won’t come from English-only content.Disclose AI use. Being open about it protects trust.

The bottom line: UGC isn’t a trend that will fade. It’s how people decide what to buy now. In the future, AI will help scale content, but real people will still make it trustworthy.
